Sprenkels American Bulldogs
Frequently Asked Questions
I have compiled a list of questions and answers I am frequently asked about my puppies and how we do things here. If you still have further questions feel free to contact me and I will add it to my page.
How much are your puppies?
Our puppies range in price from $1250-$1800. Occasionally they will be more or less, there are several variables.
How do you decide how much you sell your puppies for?
There are several factors that go into pricing. All our dogs we breed here are health tested. Some have their championship or are bred to dog with Championships, Grand Championships, Dual Championships or have working titles. There is a major investment and expense in showing and titling dogs. It costs money to produce quality puppies. Our breeding is also very selective, we do not breed to certain studs or our own studs for convenience only. We have travelled all over USA to view dogs in person to improve the breed. However, in our opinion, our pricing is somewhat in line with other local breeders that do not health test nor are they involved in the breed. Our puppies may be slightly more, but think wisely when purchasing a puppy you will own for 10-16 years.
What health testing is done on your dogs?
All our dogs have their hips and elbows X-rayed and sent in to either Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or PennHip. They are also tested for breed dispositioned disease, Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses and ichthyosis. We have also recently started OFA cardiac certifying as well. Bulldogs are a commonly dysplastic breed. Hip dysplasia is not always recognized without proper testing. By testing we can avoid dogs with hip issues, this lowers the chance of passing the issue on to off spring. Genetic disease can be carrier by dam or sire without issue. Testing for these common diseases can prevent producing puppies effected by NCL or Ichthyosis. Ichthyosis is a skin disorder that is recognized at birth and puppies will need to be put to sleep due to this. NCL is a neurological disease which slowly causes loss of bodily control. It is a fatal disease. Age of onset can start anywhere from 9 months to 4 years of age. The test for this disease is only 40$ USD. There is no excuse for breeders to not pay this small expense to prevent accidently producing NCL affected puppies.
There are plenty of breeders advertising their dogs as health tested or healthy. Just because a dog appears healthy, does not mean it does not carry a genetic disease or suffer from hip dysplasia.
Why can't we pick our puppy as soon as they are born?
When we decide two dogs together it is because we plan to keep puppies from the breeding to continue our line. We do not breed dogs, just to produce pets to sell. By 7 weeks of age we have a chance to assess the temperament (this is a working breed and there will be a variance between litter mates!) and structure so we can keep the best prospects to move forward with. We also do not let people chose puppies based on looks alone. Some puppies will be more dominant than others. Our goal is to place puppies that are the right fit for them temperament wise, not based on patches or markings. Any reputable, experienced breeder should be following the same policy. Stay clear of breeders who insist you chose at days old.
